RALEIGH - The 21 mayors in the NC Metropolitan Coalition elected a new leader last week. Greensboro’s Mayor Keith Holliday took over as the chairman of the urban coalition by unanimous vote of the mayors. Immediate Past Chair, Charlotte’s Mayor Pat McCrory, who served as Chairman for three years, handed the gavel to Mayor Holliday last Wednesday during a meeting in Raleigh. “ I look forward to Mayor Holliday’s leadership,” said McCrory, “Keith’s proven ability to bring our cities together and work with state officials and the business community will continue to help move our state’s cities forward.” Mayor Holliday is taking over leadership of an organization that was formed in 2000 by the mayors in North Carolina’s larger cities in order to give them a stronger voice in state policy and promote strategies that advance the state’s urban centers. “ I am honored to serve in this leadership position, especially at this critical time on our state’s history” said Holliday, “We are an urban state now and our cites are the homes to the economic engines in this state. I am committed to working with my fellow mayors and other urban leaders to make sure we get the tools and support from the state that we need to continue to improve the quality of life for all our citizens.” During a Coalition sponsored breakfast meeting with over 50 state legislators last week Holliday said, “More and more the cities in our state are the key to success – without vibrant and prosperous cities our state cannot compete in the global economy.” In addition to electing
new officers, the Metropolitan Coalition outlined state legislative
and regulatory priorities for 2003 during meetings with legislators.
The mayors also continued to build their alliance with business leaders
during meetings with chamber of commerce representatives from urban
areas across the state. |
