NC Rehab Building Code Seminars
Last year Governor Mike Easley signed into law the NC Rehab Building
Code Pilot Program. The hope is that this new code can encourage renovation
of existing structures - thus creating another tool in the effort to
revitalize downtowns and older neighborhoods.
If you, or someone you know, is interested in learning the details of
the new rehab building code, the American Institute of Architects NC
Chapter's Continuing Education Academy has organized a series of seminars
to be held across the state. These seminars are designed for code officials.
These 2-day seminars will be held in Charlotte, Asheville, Raleigh and
Wilmington, beginning March 12 in Charlotte.

Kathy Rainey (919) 833-6656.
The pilot program code is based on the "strikingly successful" and nationally
award winning rehab code first used in New Jersey. North Carolina joins
NJ and Maryland as the only states trying to implement this code on
more than a single district scale.
The pilot program is presently limited to local jurisdictions that have
"local plan review authority" and choose to particpate in the pilot
progam. As the code proves successful and it gains in popularity with
it is hoped that its application and eligibility will broaden.
Inspection jurisdictions that may be eligible now are: Counties of Mecklenburg,
Cleveland, Cabarrus, New Hanover and the cities of Raleigh, Greensboro,
Asheville, Rocky Mount, Kinston and Winston-Salem. Other jurisdictions
may want to learn more about the code so they may evaulate it for use
in their communities.
